Averill Manufacturing Visitor a New York, Usa doll manufacturer has a long and somewhat confusing history, mostly due to the various names the visitor operated nether such equally: Averill Mfg. Corp., Paul Averill, Inc., Brophy Doll Company (in Canada), Georgene Averill, Georgene Novelties, Inc. and Madame Hendren.

It was begun past husband and wife team James "Paul" Averill and wife Georgene Hopf Averill, they likewise employed Georgene's brother Rudolph A. Hopf and girl Maxine Averill.  Georgene or Madame Georgene the doll designer, sometimes used the trade proper noun Madame Hendren which is also in some of the doll markings, also Life-Like doll or Lyf-Lyk and Wonder dolls.

Averill collaborated with Borgfeldt, Horsman and several other doll artists, they are probably best known for cloth Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls designed by Johnny Gruelle and the Bonnie Baby doll.

Different dolls were purchased from other doll makers, dressed in outfits and sold by Averill.  The doll mold 72 is the same face mold as the Effanbee Betty Bounce doll.

ca. 1916-1920s Averill Indian dolls, Native American dolls, Blackness dolls, Cowboy dolls,  thirteen-20" tall, composition flared or shoulder head and cloth doll, partial or full composition limbs, usually with painted brown yes, airtight oral fissure, black molded painted pilus for boys, black mohair wig in braids some over molded pilus for girls, dressed in felt Native American costume; tunic with fringe trimmed with beads, simple felt ribbon looped thru punched holes and tied for closure, pants or skirt with fringed, moccasin shoes, and headbands or feathered head dress every bit appropriate to the grapheme or a felt fringed cowboy outfit with tunic and felt chaps.

Averill used several different dolls; some neck markings are; Trion Toy Co  1915 or unmarked on doll, a iii leaf clover with initials R F L inside each leaf, A.M. � Co.  Bodies may accept the ink stamp; Madame Hendren's Life-Similar Doll, Patented June 4th, 1918.   See below for the 1923 Blackness Rufus Indian dressed doll with Dolly Dingle confront mold.

ca.1916-1920s Averill Indian, Native American, Papoose Baby dolls, 4-12" tall in their felt fringed carriers; German bisque, celluloid, all limerick or limerick and textile dolls, painted eyes, closed mouth, painted molded blackness pilus. Most of these dolls are unmarked, or it's unknown how marked due to the clothing and felt carrier that encloses them.  Most had a fabric tag fastened; Madame Hendren, Character Doll, Costume Pat. May ninth, 1916.

1918 Madame Hendren Life-Like doll or Lyf-Lyk doll, 1st Mama doll, 17, 20, 24-25" alpine, bisque or composition heads, hands and forearms, cloth stuffed body with a tailored heel, molded painted hair, painted eyes, open up or closed oral fissure.  Dolls are unmarked.  Trunk has an ink stamp; Madame Hendren Life-Similar Doll, Patented June 11th, 1918.  This is the beginning Baby doll created by Georgene, who is known to us today, as a Mama doll.

1924 Averill Pinky Winky doll, xviii" tall, apartment narrow caput of fabric with a celluloid mask face and molded painted hair on forepart of face, large googly similar celluloid deejay eyes, closed mouth with dimples in each cheek and chin, cloth torso and limbs, mitt easily.  Dolls are unmarked or marked M1S.

ca. 1924 Averill Sis Hopkins doll, thirteen-14" tall, composition shoulder head and lower arms, cloth blimp body upper arms and legs, stitched hips, molded pilus with five rust colored yarn pigtails and tied with a green ribbon, blackness side glancing painted eyes, watermelon painted slight smiling mouth, designed past Grace G. Drayton Wiederseim.  Doll mark 1000. G. Drayton �.  Sister Hopkins was a graphic symbol played by comedian Rose Melville (1873-1946).

About 1912 Amberg as well made a Sis Hopkins doll marked Sis Hopkins.

1926-1929 Averill Whistling Dan doll, 14" alpine, white or black doll, two different head molds ane with side glancing optics the other looking straight forrad, composition head and lower artillery, cloth trunk, upper arms and legs, painted side glancing eyes, puckered open mouth with a hole for whistling, doll heads are unmarked, an ink postage stamp mark on the cloth body of Genuine, Madame Hendren, Doll, Patented Feb. ii, 1926, Made in USA.  Dan came dressed in a long sleeve shirt with bib front pants, also came dressed as a Dutch boy, Police man, Sailor or Cowboy.

Other Averill whistling dolls are; Whistling Nell a white girl doll and Whistling Rufus used the same head mold as Dan with molded hair every bit a Black doll or with 3 tuffs of hair.

1926-1946 Averill Bonnie Babe doll, 12-24" alpine, bisque or celluloid head with molded painted hair, material body, composition limbs - some have a limerick body with aptitude limb arms, sleep eyes, open up grin rima oris with two lower teeth, doll mark Copr.  By Georgene Averill Germany 1005-3653 1386 or 1402 on caput.  The larger bisque heads were made by ABG -  Alt, Beck & Gottschalck and imported from Germany, distributed through George Borgfeldt.

There is too a Bonnie Baby doll mold 1393 probably fabricated by the merged successors of ABG now named Carl Beck & Alfred Schultz, seven" tall, bisque head, sleep optics, open up mouth (no teeth), wigged with a jointed limerick body, painted socks and shoes.  Other small Bonnie Babe doll mold 12386 were fabricated by Gebr�der Heubach.

1929 Averill Jimmie doll (boy) or his girl friend Dimmie doll, 14" alpine, Patsy type expect a like, socket head with all composition jointed body with/or without torso twist ball joint waist, molded painted pilus styled like Patsy with straight beyond bangs, large painted pupils comic like optics, dolls are unmarked merely had a wrist tag, dolls with the body twist waist may have an ink postage on trunk; Madame Hendren, Patent Awaiting.  Nosotros think both dolls are identical, but that the clothing adamant the dolls proper name ie. dressed every bit a boy and so it'south Jimmie, dressed as girl then it'south Dimmie.

Note: This doll was also called Boots doll by Horsman, Tootsie doll by Sears, both dolls are unmarked and the Maxine Doll Company named their doll Mitzi and is marked with her name,

To make a positive ID on the manufacturer, ink stamp on doll torso, tagged wear, original wrist tag, box or mayhap some manufacturers may accept had a mark on their doll.

1934 Averill Uncle Wiggily Longears and Nurse Jane Fuzzy Wuzzy dolls, xviii-21" tall, animal graphic symbol dolls, all stuffed cloth toy with painted facial features.  The Uncle Wiggily graphic symbol is a rabbit dressed every bit an elderly human being with tiptop hat, overcoat, shirt, necktie, vest and pants, the stuffed toys are usually unmarked, only originally had a hang tag that said: Georgene Averill.  Nurse Jane wore a long gown and is a muskrat.

The Uncle Wiggily character is based on the Uncle Wiggily'south Adventure story book's, newspaper columns, comics, board games, radio show and more than, all created by American author Howard R. Garis (1873-1962) beginning in 1910.  The 1920s radio show was sponsored past Ovaltine.

1921-1924 Averill Stone a Bye Baby doll, 14, sixteen, eighteen" tall, composition shoulder caput and lower artillery, material upper arms, body and straight legs, mohair wig, tin sleep eyes that close when doll is rocked, three criers; in doll body and both hips, open mouth, shipping box is the dolls cradle.  Doll is unmarked.  The Rock a Goodbye Baby doll was also sold through Sears.

1923-1924 Averill Chocolate Drop doll, eleven-12 or sixteen" tall, brown textile rag doll on printed fabric with three yarn pigtails, designed by Grace Drayton, doll mark Chocolate Driblet Copyright past G.G. Drayton.

1923 Averill Dolly Dingle doll, 11-12 or 16" tall, white all cloth rag doll on printed fabric, blonde hair, big circular optics, designed by Grace Drayton, doll marking Copyright by G.G. Drayton. Too, some xi" alpine, Dolly Dingle textile dolls, were multi-face dolls with ii faces.

1923 Averill U-Shab-Ti doll or Ushabti doll, xviii" tall, Averill'south Tutankhaman Toys & Tut's Pup, brown composition shoulder caput and hands, brown cloth artillery, trunk and legs, molded and pained black hair, painted brownish eyes, slightly open smile mouth.  Doll is unmarked.  Wore an Egyptian headdress, matching skirt a belt and sandals. This same head mold was used on a white Mama doll, as well unmarked.

1924-1925 Averill Babe Dingle, part of  the Dolly Dingle group of dolls, composition head with molded hair, painted eyes or sleep eyes.

1924 Boob Mcnutt doll, 34" tall, comic grapheme (1915-1934) created past Rube Goldberg, printed lithograph on oilcloth facial features and shirt with tie 1 piece doll, oilcloth blackness sport jacket, rust pants, blackness shoes and tiny yellow hat, made for Star Doll & Toy Co.  Doll is marked with his name "Boob Mcnutt" imprinted beneath his tie on front and came with a hangtag,

1926 Averill Betty Bronson Cinderella doll, xiii" alpine, a topsy-turvy ii headed doll, both are composition shoulder heads and arms, gray tin sleep eyes, brown mohair wig with a shared trunk, no legs, doll is unmarked.  Betty Bronson (1906-1971) was an actress, played Peter Pan and was in A Buss For Cinderella both JM Barrie silent films.

1927 Averill Rag or Tag, 5" tall, dog or cat figurines, hinge cervix, drinking glass eyes, unremarkably marked Rag Trademark Copr. past Georgene Averill  890 Deutschland.

1930s Averill Aviator Daughter doll, 17" alpine, composition shoulder caput, stuffed cloth body and limbs, dressed every bit an Aviator; jacket, shirt, wool pants, under clothing, leggings, shoes, hat and goggles, doll is unmarked.  Head mold was used on other Hendren - Averill dolls.

Belatedly 1930s Georgene Miss America doll, 14" tall, all cloth doll with side glancing painted eyes, existent eyelashes, yarn hair, airtight oral cavity, came dressed on a red, white and blue apparel with a Statue of Freedom cardboard crown, doll marked with a hangtag; Georgene's Nu-Art Doll A Product of Georgene Averill Novelties, Inc. Made in United states Miss America.


ca. 1950s Averill Baby Dawn doll, twenty" tall, all vinyl with rooted hair, large sleep eyes, dimples in cheeks, open slight smiling oral cavity, doll normally marked AVERILL.
